Issue #22: Can You Love Money?

Money is the root of evil, Money is life?

What is love? Can you love money?

LOVE IS IN THE AIR! Or at least that is what Valentine’s Day is supposedly saying. Let’s be real though, that holiday is derived from Valentine Massacre…so let’s not get too wrapped up in it please.

Alright so clearly you know the wifey and I do not participate in V-Day, however we do make sure to get extra cuddles and remind each other that everyday is a love day, even on the bad days as we grind through life.

Side Note: Another reason for using LOVE in this issue is because it’s Issue #22! #22 was my HS football number and is near and dear to my heart!

So Valentine’s Day was yesterday….We have been recording a lot of episodes of NOB$ Wealth Podcast this week and it’s issue #22. So I was destined to talk about Love & Money (hint that will be a new series on the show, btw).

I want to take a different approach to how you think you “LOVE” money, we all say it, shit I am guilty of it myself. We “Love” money that is why we work, we “love” money because it buys us things…yadda yadda.

The truth is we don’t “LOVE” money we “tolerate” it, we “use” it, we “obsess” over it…I am no psychologist but if you used those words to describe your love for someone, I would assume they would say that isn’t actually love and it’s unhealthy.

Yet we as the people keep living our lives as if we truly “LOVE” Money.

3 Reasons to STOP “Loving” Money

1. Relationships

Stop Loving Money and start Loving your family, friends and community. No I am not saying you do not currently love them but by living life “loving” money, do you sacrifice too much? Are you present enough with your relationships?

A quote that I find last week stated “Net-worth = your network”, I adapted that to say your “True wealth = your community”…. True wealth isn’t about money, solely, it is about your ability to live how you want, by taking care of others and your loved ones.

Nowhere in there does it state that you “love” your money or are so in love that you miss out on your relationships. Do me a favor, focus on your relationships, money will come and go, your community will be there to support you ALWAYS.

2. Memories

You have heard the ole saying “You can’t take it with you” well there has been research that states right before you die your brain spends 5-7 minutes going through all your memories. Kind of dumping it out, since you can’t take it with you. So if our bodies last spent energy is to dump our memories so we can see our lives once more, do you think your memories will be about work, money, financial choices you made, the emotions behind that?

OR will they be about vacations, family, loved ones, sporting events etc? I think we all know the answer to that! Yes, I know you are going to say but I can’t do any of that without money….well

YOU ARE RIGHT! However, that is not you “loving” money, that is you utilizing the tool of money, the thing you love is the memories that have been developed in your life. A lot of those do not take a ton of money, they take connections with people, aka community.

So I challenge you to focus on your memories and developing those, not focused on spending your time making money so you can do this, focus on being present and realizing money is just a tool, nothing more nothing less.

3. Mental Health

Luckily in our society, #mentalhealthawareness is not as Taboo anymore. IMHO, the root to a lot of Mental Health issues comes from an abusive relationship with money. This could stem from childhood trauma, loss of a job, media, societal (Keeping up with the jones’s)…all of those cause this emotional connection/reaction with money that leads to awful decisions. From gambling, drug dealing, being abusive in relationships, divorces, infidelity, being an awful parent/friend/person…etc. All because the emotions of money drive your being.

Good news is you get to choose to change this behavior, you can choose to focus your life on your relationships or building your memories, you can choose to not let money control your emotional being. YOU are in control, first things first, you need to save 10-15% of your income prior to any expenses…hardest thing to do financially but it’s a start.

To conclude this issue, I just have one ask for you…

Please focus on your relationships, mental health and your memories, stop letting money be what controls your emotions, can you do that for me?

If you are needing help, reach out, I can help you, I know 15 others who are ready to help you as well. You have to be ready to change…
