Effects of Child Care On Parents

"Shi**ers Full"

January 2023 is off to a wonderful start with craziness of life hitting us from all sides, from sickness, partnership and now child care issues. Whew, get me to my Bday month already! (February if you didn't know)

This is how much child care costs in 2022

Before I dive into my juicy story about our daycare situation that just occurred this week! Wanted to highlight the strain all parents are feeling with the cost of child care, this article highlights these issues.

Besides being overly concerned with rising inflation which will only drive child care costs higher, this snippet from the article is what worries me the most about maintaining a positive #moneymindset.

Parents are cutting back on essentials.  In turn, parents are making sacrifices to afford care and cutting back on budgets for:Vacations and travel (51%). Leisure activities (51%). Food, dining (45%) .Clothing (41%). Extracurriculars (37%).

They’re also overhauling their work — and personal — lives Many also plan to make the following work changes to adhere to rising care costs: 31% are considering taking on a second job.   26% are reducing hours at work.   25% are changing jobs.  21% leaving the workforce entirely.  Survey respondents are also adjusting their family plans to stay on track financially. 35% say they’re less likely to have more children with 43% listing the rising cost of child care as a major reason why.

As you can see the cutting back on essentials and/or changing work, can cause resentment in relationships with money (in general too) and this resentment will change your mindset to focus on cutting expenses not on producing more income and living life on your terms.  I understand it is not easy and in my personal story below, you'll see we are doing the same thing but mentally have to realize it is a short term solution and that long term, generating more income to overcome shortfalls is needed.  This will drive the positive #moneymindset, as opposed to a negative one where your money rules your emotions/life.

This next article I wanted to bring to your attention is to let you feel, you are not in this alone.  Previous section was about the doom and gloom, this is about how other parents are feeling about their situations.

It is important as humans for us to recognize we are not alone, in almost any situation, we are built in communities and thrive with others around us. So as you go through this article, notate that there are many families in the similar boat as you, go ahead reach out talk through the situations and as a community you can come up with a solution.

I know I just said that we should come together as a community, I better address the elephant in the room however.  That is we as a #community LOATHE talking about our money situation in front of anyone, hell that even means in front of experts, like myself.  People hold their money situation closer to their chest than they do their legal or health issues.  Seems backwards to me, because if others knew we can help, same goes for legal and health, your community is here to support you not to judge or demean you.  Once we can get through that stigma as a society you will see a lot more growth in the lower income areas with focus on providing small businesses with my more business...just my humble opinion.

Truth is get with your community of friends and focus on building each other up!

Stoy's Story Time

It is time....the time you have waited for, STORY TIME.

First, isn't that picture just the damn cutest?!  That was taken I believe 3 years ago, at Christina's, which is/was our daycare lady.

Backstory, Christina has been our daycare lady for the last 8.5 years!  Since Lincoln was about 3 months old, the boys have gone to her and even now during their school years, on off days or summers they are there.  Besides having Christina be an arm of our family, we have forged such close friendships with families that she watches! So for 8.5 years this is who we know, best part is she is only $30 a day per kid, which at our local facility that is closer to $60...so financially also been fanatstic.

So fast forward to January 16th, we get a text from her that she has to shutdown her daycare due to DHS, receiving a tip that she is over the legal limit of kids.  Now don't get me wrong, she may or may not have been, I cannot confirm because I truly DGAF, she is an amazing person let alone daycare lady.  So come to find out this "anonymous" report comes from a disgruntled person who is attempting to ruin her life over some nonsense. All in all, there are probably 10 families negatively effected, we are lucky and have the kids in school most days but the emotional toll of them losing Christina for the summer has been tough to deal with not to mention, now our 3 closest families are scrambling for summer, I cannot imagine the infants/newborns she watches and their families that effective immediately had to adjust.

As the articles above stated, finding day care is beyond limited plus rising costs and in our situation it would basically double the costs, so what do families do?  Well we are banding together, as a community and going to help Christina fight these accusations and structure it better to protect herself and the day care, worst case, we take turns during the summer of working from home and watching the kids because that is what we do as a community!
